Dennis
W. O'Leary has a lifetime's experience of working with Thoroughbred
racehorses. Dennis' grandfather used to be a race horse trainer and
all his eight sons, among them Cecil O'Leary, Dennis' father, became
jockeys and race horse trainers.
When
Dennis was 12 years old he got his first pony and by the age of 15 he was
riding track work and schooling horses over the jumps. 1968 he
started an apprenticeship as a saddler which he successfully
completed in 1972.
In
the next few years he spent a lot of time in the racing industry receiving
a thorough grounding in all aspects from breaking in horses, shoeing
them as far as medical treatments and most importantly how to train
winners. He finally obtained his
own trainers licence in 1978.
In
the same year he also bought his property in Normanville together
with his brother, John O'Leary and they founded High
Country Trails, a trail riding business which is still operating
today by Dennis' wife, Karen O'Leary, taking tourists for rides
along the beach.
